Alacritous Dating

A few months ago, I became just one more of those well-educated late twenty-something women to re-enter singlehood. Yes, I am one of those women whose family is wondering why she's still single and whose friends assure is "amazing" but just hasn't found the right guy. The last few months have taught me two things, 1) that I have wonderful friends and family and 2) online personals can be hilarious. Here's my story.

One More Thing

I forgot to mention...I received a Christmas Day email from my crush. What is up with that? My brother-in-law and sister think the he's a) gay or b) one of those guys who doesn't want commitment but isn't quite ready to push it entirely away either...therefore needs to keep in a little bit of contact with me. Buh whuh?

On a brighter note, I have a date tomorrow night with EP. I also forgot to mention that he owns a motorcycle. I don't know how I feel about that.

Vroom vroom.

We're Not in Kansas Anymore

I just got back from spending Christmas with my family in Kansas. And who knew what kind of crazy family dynamics would come out of the woodwork now that I've re-entered the tribe of singletons. I mean, there was no fist fighting drama...just a lot of comments and gift-giving from the parents that let me know where I stand in their eyes. Conclusions are as follows:

My parents think there's a good chance I will stay single forever.
Evidence: While eating brunch on Christmas day with my family and my brother's in-laws, my mom announces, "When I get old, I'll just move in with [me]. If she's still not married by then, she can take care of me."

My parents think I am in need of spiritual exercise.
Evidence: In addition to a bathrobe and a winter coat that's 2 sizes too big, I received a series of "spiritual fitness" gifts from my parents. Items included: a PAPERWEIGHT that reads "Nature does not hurry yet everything is accomplished, " a sterling silver bracelet that reads "To thine own self be true," and a t-shirts that says "Open mind, strong body, beautiful soul." And if that wasn't enough, the box also included a DVD on how to apply make up and a pair of blue furry socks. WTF?!

My parents think they are still supporting me financially.
Evidence: My dad told my brother he is waiting for me to get married so he can retire. He also told my brother that he's expecting all my siblings to contribute to said event. Mind you -- outside of the occasional financial support for a plane ticket home, my parents are not helping me out financially...and my dad is a total workaholic and will probably never retire.

Ahhhhh, there's no place like home.

Are You Serious?

Here's a message I received that I just had to share. From a suitor in Arizona:

"What do i need to do to get you to write me?...run around the block naked shouting at the top of my lungs "EMAIL ME!!! EMAIL ME!!!?"

Little does he know, I don't need to email him. I just want to post his ridiculousness on my blog.

I Can't Stop Laughing

Tonight I met up with EP for a 5.5 mile run through the city. While waiting for him, I was stretching near an intersection when a small, elderly man using a walker passes me to enter the crosswalk. As he passes, he looks at me - smiles - and says, "Nice legs!"

And I just can't stop grinning about it.

Finally, One Who Cleaned Up for Me...

...and might keep up with me too.

Over the weekend I had a mini-date with someone new I met online, Educated Pilot (EP). And he seemed really cool! He's in grad school doing a dual degree and had some funny connections/similarities to me...also grew up in a United Methodist church and competed in Anchorsplash (shout out to the DG girls!). He was really high energy and had a nice smile. We had a lovely conversation for a few hours over coffee and tea. And of course, what's the first thing I tell my sister when I get home?

"OMG! The one time I make little to no effort to clean up for the date...he shows up and looks great!"

Back story: here's what some other guys showed up wearing for a first date...
Guy #1: Black long sleeve Cowboys t-shirt, khaki shorts, short white athletic socks + black lace-up Sketcher-like shoes (grimace). Now the shirt and shorts didn't really bother me all that much because we were just meeting at sports bar to watch football. But come on ladies, the fashionista in all of us knows that -- unless you're Michael Jackson -- white socks and black shoes are a big no-no.
Guy #2: Patriots sweatshirt, jeans, black crosstrainers, backward black "fancy" baseball hat. This guy even admitted to not trying to dress up. This time -- slightly less acceptable because we were actually going out to dinner AND watching football.

There was actually a 3rd guy too, but he dressed just fine. His major strike was that he was a lot shorter than me and I felt like Ursula the Sea Witch from Little Mermaid sitting next to him.

EP showed up looking rather hipster -- jeans, button down, with the trendy casual blue blazer. I can handle that.

Hits Break 4K!

My view count on my profile has broken the 4K mark! Ha ha ha. It's actually at 4,032 to be exact. My membership is expiring in about 10 days. Finally.

Oh yeah, no major word from Hottie G. I invited him out Thursday night and he declined due to a work holiday party (good excuse for this time of year...whatev! LOL). Haven't heard from him since. See, this is why younger men are trouble.

The Entertainer

I may be getting closer to celebrating my 29th birthday but that sure doesn't mean I've shed some of my early 20-something drunken shananigans. This posting is the epilogue to item #4 in my Top 1o posting last month.

UK Andy, the local friend of the british guy I smooched, and I have become friends. One night UK Andy asked me to meet up with him and his girlfriend. Over drinks, UK Andy tells me that he's got a good looking co-worker who recently relocated here, is quite handsome, and quite single! So he wanted to introduce us. Fast forward to a few days ago, when my roommate and I threw a holiday/late birthday party at our apartment which later moved to a neighborhood bar. I invited UK Andy and he brought his co-worker, Hottie G. Hottie G turned out to be quite dreamy! After awhile, everyone from our holiday/birthday party has left the bar but I stay out drinking with UK Andy and Hottie G. Naturally, I have a few too many rounds and am quite trashed, as are UK Andy and Hottie G. We stay til bar close, where outside UK Andy says his goodbyes and immediately hops in a cab...leaving me and Hottie G on the sidewalk. Hottie G walks me home and I did what every good drunken girl who wouldn't mind some short term loving would do...I invite him upstairs. (oh yes, I'm sure my guardian angels hit the Code Red button then)

We raid my fridge for party leftovers and then the next thing I know, we're sucking face in my kitchen! I share my concern about waking up my roommate and the 2 person party moves into my room, crackers and cheese leftovers in hand. The drunken conversation, cracker eating, and smooching continues and despite my "best" efforts to keep saying, "You're TOTALLY sleeping on the couch!" Hottie G ends up crashing in my bed and I have to take him home the next morning before my aerobics class. I will confess, it was only smooching...I was able to keep things rated PG. Whew.

I woke up that morning a) hungover, b) feeling guilty that I brought a somewhat random guy home with me without warning my roommate, and c) coming to the scary realization that UK Andy will probably keep inviting me out anytime he's got a new friend around since I have proven to be quite good at "entertaining" his buddies. Sooooo not the image I was going for.

On the bright side -- as my older sister pointed out -- at least it's good to know I "still got it."
